Description: Bermuda. St George's. A memorial to the Sea Venture was wrecked on St George's reefs, Gates Bay. 150 survived the wreck on 28 July 1609. Some stayed in St George's, but others set sail on Deliverance and Patience in 1610 to Jamestown

The first named place in the islands of Bermuda.

On Friday, 28th July 1609, Sir Thomas Gates, Governor designate of the Colony of Virginia and a passenger on the "SEA VENTURE", led the first group of survivors from the wrecked vessel to shore. Leaping ashore as the ship's boat grounded, Sir Thomas declared, "THIS IS GATES, HIS BAY".

All 150 people onboard the "Sea Venture", including Admiral Sir George Somers, followed Sir Thomas ashore at this spot.
