Description: George V postbox with a suffragette connection, Risca Road, Newport In 1913 a small incendiary device was posted in this box. The perpetrator was Margaret Haig Mackworth a member of the Women's Social and Political Union (suffragettes) and the act was part of an arson campaign. A number of letters and cards were burnt and Margaret was fined £10 with £10 costs. On refusing to pay, she was committed to Usk prison 1541844 where she went on hunger strike.
