Description: Giant Seahorse in a tank in the Ripley's Aquarium of Canada. I spent quite a while crouched down at seahorse level trying to get a better picture. Unfortunately the almost dark tank with dark blue lighting and an animal that kept twisting and turning and not holding still and kept turning his face away meant this is the best I could do. The Giant Seahorse, or Hippocampus ingens is widely distributed in the Eastern Pacific region, but is considered rare throughout its range. Although there is limited information on changes in population numbers of this species, local estimates of population declines of between 50 and 90% have been reported. It is therefore conservatively suspected that population declines of at least 30% haven taken place over a period of 10 years, and that declines are continuing. Declines result from targeted catch, incidental capture, and habitat degradation from coastal development. (Toronto, Canada, Nov.2015)
