Description: Sculpted stone heraldic escutcheon above porch, Brightley Barton, Devon, showing arms of Giffard impaling Wyndham. Atop the helm is the crest of Giffard: A cockrel's head erased, in its beak an ear of wheat. The arms of Giffard (1st & 4th): Sable, three fusils conjoined in fesse ermine for difference a crescent in chief argent. quarter Coblegh (2nd): Gyronny of eight gules and sable, between two cobs (i.e. male swans) argent on a bend engrailed of the last three hurts and de Brightley (FitzWarin), (3rd): Gules, on a chief indented argent a mullet of the first. These arms can be seen more clearly sculpted on the mural monument in Tiverton Church of Roger Giffard (d.1603).
