Description: Perspective and enlarged sectional patent drawings of an unreleased Gillette razor, known in-development as Contra and later as Atra (acronym for Australian Test Razor; not to be confused with the 1977 twin-blade, swiveling-head razor known as Atra in the U.S. and Contour in Europe). The patent describes the razor as a "bi-directional shaving system in which shaving may be effected with a stroke in either of two opposite directions." The razor was ready and planned to be launched in 1971, but was abandoned last-minute in favor of the Trac II, which retained the familiar method of shaving in one direction.
