Description: Tapeats sandstone ledges as seen while looking down into Salt Creek from along the Tonto Trail in Grand Canyon National Park. NPS Photo by Michael Quinn. Tapeats sandstone. thickness: 0-400 ft. Deposited about 525 million years ago during the Early Cambrian Period, this layer is composed of tan and red sandstone and conglomerate. It forms cliffs in the Grand Canyon’s profile. The depositional environment was similar to a modern day river delta, a beach-like shoreline with small river channels. Many trace fossils have been found in this formation.
