Description: A View of Abbroa Bay and HM Troopship Apollo refitting an encampment of the 59th Regiment later titled thus on card mount on the reverse Abbroa Bay is situated within Baia de Ilha Grande, just south of Rio de Janeiro. HM Troopship Apollo sailed from Ireland on 17 June 1849, carrying the 59th Regiment, with wives and children, under orders for Hong Kong. She had 778 souls on board. A few days into the voyage, cholera broke out. She was denied facilities at Madeira, Tenerife and Rio de Janeiro, but the Brazilians allowed her to proceed to Ilha Grande, an island about sixty miles to the south-west of Rio, where the Regiment could disembark. They set up camp at ‘Albroo’ (Abraão) Bay. They remained there for 16 days, recovering their health, while the ship was thoroughly fumigated and cleaned, before proceeding. They finally reached Hong Kong in February 1850 after a near-8 month journey. Lot number: Live Auction 4073 lot 133 Sale 3 Oct 2006
