Description: A 3 dimensional map of carbon monoxide (CO) in the Helix Nebula. The third dimension is provided by the radial velocity of the carbon monoxide. Since the neutral envelope (which contains the CO) is expanding away from the central star, the radial velocity of a spectral component approximates the spacial position in the radial (away from Earth) dimension, which allows a 3D map to be produced. Light features in each view are close to the observer, darker ones are further away. This map was made from observations of the CO(2-1) rotational line at 230 GHz, using the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, during 1993 and 1994
