Description: The Hermon Dunlap Smith Cabin in the Edward L. Ryerson Area Historic District in Deerfield (1935). Smith, the vice president of insurance broker Marsh & McLennan, purchased 8 acres on the river in 1935. He was also the president of the Newberry Library and the Chicago Historical Society, and a trustee at the University of Chicago. His wife founded the Womens' Board at the Field Museum and was chairmen of the board at Hull House. Smith so enjoyed his cabin that he published a book on the Des Plaines River.
