Description: From 27 to 30 January 1980, Prime Minister Robert Muldoon went on a state visit to the Philippines. The purpose of the trip was to expand New Zealand’s relations with the Philippines, which was considered an important member of ASEAN and a country of growing significance to New Zealand. The photograph above shows Muldoon’s arrival at Manila International Airport, where he was greeted by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. Later that day, Muldoon and Marcos signed a five year energy accord designed to reduce Philippine dependence on imported oil. This was followed by a state dinner in Muldoon’s honour. The following day, Muldoon spoke at the Annual Conference of the Pacific Area Travel Association (PATA). He delivered the inaugural address to 2000 tourism industry delegates from approximately 50 countries. Muldoon also visited the ASEAN-New Zealand Afforestation Project in Mayantoc, Tarlac.
