Description: Houses of The Close: no. 59, Arundells Originally a C13 canonry, it was largely rebuilt in the C17, and has a rainwater head dated 1699. It is Grade II* Listed. The house was later occupied in the C18 by John Wyndham, who was responsible for its present look, and after the marriage of his daughter, gave away the house as a wedding present to his son-in-law James Everard Arundel. He was the son of the 6th Lord Arundel of Wardour, after whose family it was subsequently named. In more recent times, in 1985, Arundells became the home of Sir Edward Heath, former British Prime Minister, soldier, and Statesman. When he died at Arundells aged 89 in 2005, he left nearly all of his estate to a charitable foundation, whose trustees were tasked with opening Arundells to the public in perpetuity.
