Description: Dudleya traskiae—Santa Barbara Island dudleya. The species is included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.2 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). It is also listed by both the State of California and federal government as 'Endangered'. D. traskiae is endemic to Santa Barbara Island, the smallest of the Channel Islands and the southernmost island in Channel Islands National Park. Stephen McCabe, the author of the Jepson Manual treatment for Dudleya, informs me that the species was once considered extinct until a few plants were rediscovered. People interested in the species should also read the Wikipedia entry for Dudleya traskiae. A Google search will reveal resources for further study of the species. The species seems to be making a slow comeback now that feral non-native rabbits and other invasive species have been removed from the island. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
