Description: Portrait of John Brown (abolistionist) by free black artist David Bustill Bowser. Bowser reportedly met Brown in person at Bowser's underground railroad station. Since Brown only wore a beard during and after his raid on Harpers Ferry (1859) and was hung in 1859, this 1865 portrait must be from memory, not an actual sitting.
