Description: Grave of clergyman and astronomer James Pound in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Wanstead. With an additional stone placed to mark his instruction of the future Astronomer Royal James Bradley Text reads: JAMES POUND Rector of this Parish died Nov 16th 1724 ELIZABETH his Wife died Sept 10th 1740 Also lieth the Body of WILLIAM HOPKINS of this Parish Gentleman and Citizen of LONDON who died Dec 24th 1777 Aged 67 Years. Here also lieth Miss MARY HOPKINS Daughter of the Late Mr WILLIAM HOPKINS who departed this Life July 26th 1780 in her 10th Year. TO THE EARLY INSTRUCTION AND FATHERLY CARE OF THE REV. JAMES POUND, RECTOR OF WANSTEAD; ARE DUE IN A GREAT MEASURE THE ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERIES, OF HIS NEPHEW THE REV. JAMES BRADLEY SAVILIAN PROFESSOR OF ASTRONOMY, OXFORD 1721-1762, ASTRONOMER ROYAL 1742-1762. THIS STONE WAS PLACED IN 1910, BY SOME FELLOWS OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY AND OTHERS, TO MARK AND PRESERVE HIS GRAVE.
