Description: Portrait of James Wilson (1835-1920), who served as Secretary of Agriculture from 1897 to 1913. Wilson's tenure as Secretary is regarded as a period distinguished by the modernization of agricultural methods, as well as the expansion of food inspection practices. Prior to his tenure as Secretary, Wilson was a professor of agriculture at Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University), where he advised George Washington Carver.
