Description: Interred in Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, in the center of the Yale University campus, Jehudi Ashmun (1794-1825), was the agent for the American Colonization Society whose goal was to relocate free black people to Liberia in Africa. The society was supported by slave owners, who wanted to have potential free black trouble-makers removed as well as by many non-slave owners who thought it a good way to keep them out of American society. Some well-intentioned people also got involved, somehow thinking this might be the cure to slavery. Ashmun went to Liberia and did set up a new governmant there which still exists as a country today. Its capital is Monrovia, named after President James Monroe (1817-1825). The history of Liberia is interesting, too, but that is another story...
