Description: Grave of Joseph Gerhardt -- showing the original flat granite marker -- in section Circle-Left North at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C., in the United States in 2014. Prospect Hill Cemetery was added to the Register of Historic Places of the District of Columbia (a listing of historic sites maintained by the city) in 2005. Joseph F. Gerhardt (1817-1881) was a Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army and commander of the 46th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He cited for gallant and meritorious service during the American Civil War. Also buried here is John Joseph "Joe" Gerhardt (1855–1922). Known as "Move 'Em Up Joe" (his cheer), he was an American professional baseball player from 1873 to 1893 and son of Brig. Gen. Joseph Gerhardt. He was the best second baseman of his era, and invented the sacrifice play as a scoring strategy.
