Description: Kaufman, Joyce Jacobson (born 1929), Martin Marietta Corporation, Research Institute for Advanced Study (Baltimore, Md.), Johns Hopkins University Local number: SIA Acc. 90-105 [SIA-SIA2008-4572] Summary: American chemist Joyce Jacobson Kaufman (b. 1929), shown holding a molecular model, was working at the Martin Marietta Company's Research Institute for Advanced Studies, Baltimore, Maryland, when this photograph was taken, July 1964. A few years later, she returned to Johns Hopkins University as a research scientist and associate professor of anesthesiology, and elected a fellow by the American Institute of Chemists and American Physical Society. She is noted for carrying out the first all-valence-electron, three-dimensional quantum-chemical calculations, and for research on the clinical effects of tranquilizers and narcotic drugs.
