Description: Arms: Quarterly gules and Or, in canton a mullet argent, a bordure engrailed sable. Coat of arms of Hugh de Vere, as blazoned in the Caerlaverock Poem (K-037: "Huë de Ver") "O le ourle endentee de noir Avoit baniere e longe e lee De ore e de rouge esquartelee, De bon cendal non pas de toyle, E devant une blanche estoyle." (Note: the stanza gives the De Vere quarters reveresed (Or and Gules). This is how the coat of arms is in fact shown in the Camden Roll of c. 1280. As this would place the white start on a gold field, according to Wagnor on p. 105 of Aspilogia II, most early sources reversed the order in this blazon due to a preference of the heralds to naming a metal before a tincture in any evenly divided field.)
