Description: Kauffmann Memorial by William Ordway Partridge (1897) [SOS Control #IAS 76007406] The memorial consists of a curved granite wall of an exedra adorned with seven bronze relief panels and a curved bench on which a classically-draped female figure is seated. The female figure leans forward slightly with her head bowed, looking down at a wreath of asphodel which she is making. Her hair is pulled back and rolled around her face. Her robe is tied at the waist and she wears sandals. She symbolizes Memory. Behind her on the wall of the exedra are seven relief panels which depict scenes illustrating Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" from "As You Like It." Three steps lead up to the front of the exedra and in the middle of the steps is a large urn resting on a low granite block. Save Outdoor Sculpture, District of Columbia survey, 1993 SOS!
