Description: Warm-up sequence of a Philips SOX 35W U-shaped low-pressure sodium-vapor lamp: 1., 2. As the lamp's turned on, the Penning mixture starts glowing in a faint pink color (strongly resembling the light of the neon signs). 3., 4. As the sodium evaporates, gradually the whole lamp gives a bright, yellowish, monochromatic light. The excess amount of metallic sodium is also visible in strategically placed dents on both the top and the bottom of the tube (and also the wall of the bottom tube).
