Description: Portrait of Elizabeth Seymour, Duchess of Somerset (1667-1722), Countess of Ogle "This portrait and its companion (RCIN 402857) were presumably painted to commemorate the marriage of Lord and Lady Ogle on 27th March 1679, although the marriage was cut short by the death of Lord Ogle the following year. Lady Elizabeth Percy, Countess of Ogle (1667-1722) was daughter of the 11th and last Earl of Northumberland and one of the greatest heiresses in Europe. After Lord Ogle's death she was married to Thomas Thynne, who was murdered in 1682. Later in the year she married, as his first wife, Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset. She was chief mourner at the funerals of Mary II and Queen Anne, and was Groom of the Stole, 1711-14. The date of 1679 places these two portraits as some of Lely's last works and there is probably some studio assistance in the execution. The portrait of Lady Ogle is better in quality than that of the companion portrait. The sitter wears an olive-green dress and points with her left hand. A parrot perches in an orange tree planted in a large terracotta pot beside her."
