Image: Leycesteria formosa mature autumn foliage
Description: Current season's shoot of a mature specimen of Leycesteria formosa (family: Caprifoliaceae) showing large, mature leaves (still green in late November) with characteristic drip tips (an adaptation to the wet climate of its homeland - the rocky forests and cliffs of the foothills of the Himalayas). This specimen thriving at the foot of a high, south-facing garden wall opposite a stream at the foot of a wooded hill in the far north of the English county of Northumberland. The shape of the leaves recalls that of the leaves of the (unrelated) peepul tree, Ficus religiosa.
