Description: Approx 3rd instar larva of Limenitis arthemis arizonensis, the Red-spotted Purple. Mesquite Wash, eastern Maricopa County, Arizona, USA. When disturbed this caterpillar assumes a grotesque posture, which together with its coloration suggests something completely inedible. Thus it might escape predation by a hungry bird and complete its program to become an adult butterfly.
