Description: Maps showing the results of the 1986 Northern Ireland by-elections. The map on the left shows the % of the vote in each constituency won by unionist candidates opposed to the Anglo-Irish agreement. Constituencies where anti-Agreement unionist candidates won more votes than pro-agreement candidates are coloured red. Constituencies where anti-agreement unionist candidates won more votes than anti-agreement unionist candidates are coloured blue. Note - candidates in favour of the agreement did not win a majority in any constituency, as Sinn Féin also opposed the agreement on republican grounds. The map on the right shows the share of the vote won in each constituency by pro-agreement candidates. The map on the bottom shows the party that won in each constituency. In every constituency except Armagh and Newry (coloured green) the outgoing anti-Anglo Irish Agreement candidate was returned. There were no by-elections fought in Foyle or West Belfast, as the SDLP (Foyle) and Sinn Féin (West Belfast) MPs for those areas did not resign.
