Description: Margherita of Savoy (1851-1926) became queen of Italy when her husband, Umberto I, succeeded to the throne in 1878. The Italian public held the queen in high regard, and she became a great supporter of the arts. This particular etching by Alberto Maso Gilli was based on an anonymous photograph, likely taken in the 1880s or early 1890s when Queen Margherita was in her thirties.
