Description: Memorial by Maury's native state of Virginia in 1923. This is only part of a large vertical granite stone in which the plaque is embedded showing a closeup of the image. It was here that Maury's coach carrying his body from Virginia Military Institute, Lexington Virginia, was paused as Maury's request before dying before continuing onward to Richmond Virginia's Hollywood cemetery to be placed between two US Presidents. This spot was Maury's favorite area of relaxation. When Maury died at his home at V.M.I. his body had lain in state at the V.M.I. library. His chest was covered with his medals given to him. At the head of his coffin was a large globe and the anchor, seen in a photo, donated by the state of Tennessee. The anchor was wrapped around the granite stone where this image is located. The Maury Monument in Richmond, Virginia reflects the globe at the head of his coffin showing people at sea, and in a fierce storm, struggling to survive because both was M F Maury himself spent his life's work struggling for. Maury, born in Virginia, had been a Tennessee farm boy from age 5-19 and then at sea by the age of 19 years. See https://www.webcitation.org/5e8V4GgWN for a full image at Goshen Pass. Above is only a partial image of the Goshen Pass Memorial. I have noticed too, in old books, that the circular image of Maury's face has been changed. The original is far better like a real person's face.
