The description above the picture reads: MELAKA DURING THE REIGN OF SULTAN ALAUDDIN RIAYAT SYAH (1477–88) During the reign of this just and pious Islamic King, Melaka enjoyed peace and prosperity resulting from night patrols and harsh punishments against thieves who terrorized the town. Ships of all nations, Arab, Persian, Indian, Champa, Japanese and of course from the Malay Archipelago assembled at the crowded port of Malacca to trade various merchandise.
