Description: Lot-9433-7: These Are The Ships And The Men Who Deliver Oil To The Allies. Despite Axis submarines, the U.S. is continuing to deliver oil for the Allied war machine. This success is due chiefly to two things – tankers and men. The tankers carry their own “cargo insurance” – big guns for the U-boats, machine guns for enemy aircraft. The men who man them are tough, fearless and capable of meeting any opposition the enemy has to offer. These pictures, made aboard a U.S. tanker, show the men at work and some of the measures taken to protect them. Shown: Still another safety measure is the rubber kapok-packed suit that would keep the sailor afloat until he climbed into a raft. The suit can be donned in one minute, and water and concentrated food can be kept in the breast pockets. Office of War Information Photograph, 16-22 April 1942. Original photograph is small.
