Description: English:  Arms of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.Originally granted 1906, the arms depict the martyred St Tydfil after whom the town is named. The arms were designed by Sir William Goscombe John, and depict the saint holding a distaff to represent industry. The two crosses path fitchy represent daggers and thus her martyrdom. The motto Nid Cadarn Ond Brodyrdde (meaning 'No strength but brotherhood' in Welsh), was coined by Iolo Morganwg, who attributed it to St Cadoc.[1] The word brodyrdde is rarely used in modern Welsh today. The borough corporation was abolished in 1974, and the arms transferred to Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council in 1976. When the borough council was replaced by a county borough council in 1996 the arms were transferred a second time.
