Description: Miscou Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1856 at the southern entrance to Chaleur Bay by Quebec Trinity House, which then supervices navigation on the St. Lawrence River and Gulf. Considered a major coastal aid it merited the subsequent installation of a powerful dioptric light and a diaphone fog alarm. The octagonal tower of hand-sawn timbers, shingled on the outside, was originally 74 feet in height and was extended in 1903 to 80 feet. This lighthouse, substantially in its original state, is among the oldest in the Gulf of St. Lawrence region. The lantern at Miscou Island houses a functioning third-order Fresnel lens, the only Fresnel lens still operating in an authentic lighthouse in New Brunswick. After an environmental cleanup in 2008, the province undertook a large scale project to make this a major tourist destination in the region. A paved parking area (large enough for tour buses), a deck around the lighthouse and washroom facilities in addition to a large grass area are completed.
