Description: Effigy in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Exton, Rutland, to Anne Chichester (d.1627) (Countess of Elgin), daughter of Sir Robert Chichester (1578-1627), Knight of the Bath, lord of the manor of Raleigh in the parish of Pilton in Devon, Custos Rotulorum and Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, and first wife of Thomas Bruce, 1st Earl of Elgin (Lord Bruce of Kinlosse) of Houghton House in the parish of Maulden in Bedfordshire, and grand-daughter of John Harington, 1st Baron Harington (d. 1613) of Exton. She died in 1627, the day after having given birth to Robert Bruce, 2nd Earl of Elgin, 1st Earl of Ailesbury (d.1685). At her feet is shown the crest of Chichester: A heron wings elevated with an eel in its beak. Another effigy of her survives, in kneeling posture, on the monument to her father in Pilton Church, Devon. On either side of the inscribed black panel below are two heraldic oval cartouches sculpted in white marble, the left one showing the arms of Bruce, the right one the arms of Harington impaling Kelloway/Keilway, (see image[1]) representing Anne's maternal grandfather John Harington, 1st Baron Harington (1539/40 – 23 August 1613) of Exton, who married Anne Keilway, daughter of Robert Keilway, Surveyor of the Court of Wards and Liveries. The magnificent and sumptuous monument of Robert Keilway (erected by Lord Harington and his wife Anne Keilway) survives in Exton Church. Uploader: "Exton church has many fine monuments, and this was my favourite. She looks so peaceful lying here"
