Description: Detail of the monument to Christopher Colombus (1451?–1506) at the Plaza de Colón ("Columbus Square") in Madrid (Spain), built between 1881 and 1885. It's the southern side of the square base, sculpted in stone in a Neo-gothic style by Arturo Mélida (1849–1902). Relief represents a Madonna and Child (Our Lady of the Pillar) between two angels; below, the name of the three ships: Pinta (left), Santa María (centre) and Niña (right); and the names of those who took part in the enterprise. At the four corners of the base there are heralds below canopies.
