Thestudy of the beginnings of the great centres of population ofthe world possesses a peculiar interest for many, but the earlyhistory of some of these cities, such as Rome, London, andParis, is lost in the obscurity of ages long past; while others,such as St. Petersburg, and, to a certain extent, Berlin, builtin pursuance of a rigid, pre-arranged plan of the governmentalpowers, possess no more of antiquarian interest than does thegrowth of New York under the Commissioners plan of 1807.
