Description: Old Bolsheviks: Nikolai Bukharin, the editor of Pravda and Projector. Ivan Skvortsov-Stepanov, the First People's Commissar (Minister) for Finance. Lev Karakhan, Deputy People's Commissar (Deputy Minister) for Foreign Affairs, the first Soviet Ambassador to China. Context: in one year after the photo’s publication, Joseph Stalin became de-facto dictator of the country. The lucky among three is Ivan Skvortsov-Stepanov since he had died from typhoid fever in Oct 1928 and buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis. Nikolai Bukharin confessed as “the enemy of the people” during Trial of Twenty One and executed in 1938. Lev Karakhan sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Tribunal in 1937.
