Description: Part of 1878 OS map (inch-map; England and Wales sheet 273) of Hampton-on-Sea in East Kent, England, showing oyster fishery buildings and fishponds, although the workers' houses are not shown on this inch-map. It does, however, show that the tramway did not go in a straight line south to the railway line, but diverted to the west, reaching the line it where the Westbrook crosses it. In 1866, the oyster fisheries company told an enquiry commission that it had not yet extended the tramway along the pier, but this map shows the tramway along the pier by 1878. This map shows early stages of coastal erosion initiated by the construction of the pier in 1865. The high water level on the north coast to the east of the pier is moving north as the beach material mounts up; the coastline to the west of the pier is being eroded away and is moving south.
