Description: This portrait of General Douglas MacArthur was done by Julian Lamar. It comes from the estate of Colonel Sidney Mashbir, who served as one of General MacArthur's most significant intelligence advisors during WWII in the Pacific. Sidney Mashbir strongly looked up to General MacArthur and when this portrait came available for purchase, he acquired it. According to Sidney Mashbir’s wife Alice, this portrait was one of her husband’s most loved things. The portrait hung over his mantle at his house in Emerald Bay, Laguna Beach. Alice also stated that the painting was commissioned by General MacArthur’s wife Jean. When Colonel Sidney Mashbir passed away, Alice gifted it to two of his very close friends, Marine Lt. William Warren and his father Marine Colonel Robert Warren. William and Robert contacted Stan S. Katz, the author of the historical novel The Emperor and the Spy, which honors the memory of Colonel Mashbir, and said they now wished to share this powerful painting with others. The artist Julian Lamar was born Julian Kitchen Lamar Miller in Augusta, Georgia, he shortened his name to Lamar in 1922 to honor his mother’s family and to make his name more memorable as an artist. Although he began painting as a child, his family encouraged him to attend the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1918. After the Armistice, he resigned his commission to concentrate on his career as an artist. Lamar lived for a while in Chicago, then moved to New York in 1920. He maintained an active studio in New York, but traveled extensively to paint his subjects in their native surroundings. He painted many prominent figures, including Prime Minister Winston Churchill; President Franklin D. Roosevelt; Franklin H. Martin, President, American College of Surgeons; and Governor Frank Dixon, Alabama. He was also an accomplished landscape painter.
