The populations of Ommatotriton from northwestern Turkey (from the vicinity of Akçay on the northern part of Anatolia west to the Sea of Marmara region near Subaşi, Turkey) are now classified as a separate species Ommatotriton nesterovi (Litvinchuk, Zuiderwijk, Borkin, and Rosanov, 2005) [1].
