Description: Debarking of a Buffalo thorn by a Cape porcupine in Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve, Pretoria. They often gnaw on the bark of broad-leaved trees, but avoid Acacia and Sicklebush. They possibly derive sugars and calcium from the bark, and also like to gnaw on dry bones, which are carried to their lairs. It has also been suggested that they gnaw tree bark in order to wear down their growing incisors, or to mark their territory.
