Description: His lyre tumbling to the ground, the youth Cephalus flees the amorous goddess Eos. She grabs his neck while fingering her mantle in the traditional gesture of a demure bride. This theme was a popular subject for red-figure vessels from the early to mid 5th century BC. This "stamnos" (wine container) belongs to a class of vessels which has a low foot in the form of a ring. There are seven known "stamnoi" of this type. All have the same size and proportions and were probably fashioned by the same potter.
