Description: Plastic deformation of steel armour plate as a result of projectile impact. When combining steel armour with passive fire protection materials, even if they have good impact resistance at ambient, it is advisable to consider how brittle and/or compressible passive fire protection materials are once stressed by fire, where such plastic deformation can knock material loose. The combined use of any armour material together with passive fire protection materials must be proven fit for purpose first by fire testing in order to eliminate negative consequences. Under fire conitions, steel first expands and then loses its strength. That means unfireproofed steel armour can tear a fire barrier that is stressed by fire apart and also not work to stop projectiles because the unfireproofed steel armour softens within minutes of the start of a fire. Combustible armour incapable of passing ASTM E136 can actually add fuel to a fire, right on or in the barrier, which would be equally catastrophic. Everything has to be tested together in full scale fire testing to make sure it works as intended when combined.
