Description: 2017 commemoration of aboriginal freedom fighters Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener, at the monument erected by the City of Melbourne. This is one of the few monuments erected in Australia in recognition of the aboriginal resistance to the European invasion. It was won after a campaign of several years to highlight the need for this public recognition of the frontier war against the indigenous nations in Victoria at the time. Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener were the first two people to be judicially executed in Melbourne and Victoria, on January 20, 1842. They are buried in the first cemetery for the infant European colony, under the Queen Victoria markets. Commemoration Committee website See Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner on City of Melbourne website for information on the memorial and history.
