Description: An immature Pennant-winged Nightjar captured in exhausted condition near Shamvura Camp, northern Namibia, Jan 13, 2007. Revived and later released. Mensural data: tarsus 20.0mm, culmen 20.5mm, wing 159mm, tail 112mm and mass 48.2g, i.e. very lean. Size comparable to European Nightjar. Immature, as it lacks the tawny collar, hardly shows the wing covert markings, has only slight scapular markings, and has rufous rather than buffy tips to the secondary remiges. Otherwise resembles an adult female PWN with remiges barred distinctly in rufous and brown. Probably male, due to thin tail barring and P1 being the longest remige. Wing shape distinct in having the distal primary (P1) longest besides absence of clear primary emargination. In adulthood the primaries and rectrices lack the white markings typical of Caprimulgus species. Readily confused with immatures of those species, which have similar though much finer barring.
