Description: The historic Swindall Tourist Inn was built in 1913 and is located at 1021 E. Washington St.. Prior to 1964, public accommodations in Phoenix and Arizona were segregated. African-Americans were not allowed to stay in the hotels in downtown Phoenix. The structure, which is listed in the National register of Historic Places ref. number 95001081, is the only known surviving African-American boarding house remaining in Phoenix.
