Description: Pablo PicassoSpanish 1881 – 1973 Man with a Lamb , 1943-44 Bronze Pablo Picasso made this sculpture in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II, after developing the theme in preparatory drawings during much of 1942. Many historical prototypes have been suggested for this pairing of a calm, bearded man and an imploring sheep, including animal-bearers in ancient art and images of the Christian Good Shepherd, but Picasso denied any single association. Belying the sculpture’s apparent simplicity are divided implications related to human nature and experience. Is this a pastoral and essentially hopeful image, a symbol of salvation, or is it also an emblem of suffering and sacrifice? Gift of R.Sturgis and Marion B. F. Insgersoll, 1958-155-1 From the Placard: Philadelphia Museum of Art.
