Description: In 1857, the Dutch naval doctor Pompe van Meerdervoort arrived in Japan to teach a number of major medical subjects. He succeeded in setting up the first complete Western medical training college. In 1861, the first Western Hospital was opened in Japan, where Pompe van Meerdervoort played an important role.
