Description: Thomas Hickey (Dublin 1741 - 1824 Madras) Portrait of Major General Edward Sandford (D. 1781), Three-Quarter-Length, Wearing a Red Coat with Black Cuffs and Holding a Sword signed and dated lower left: T Hickey / 1769; and inscribed on the reverse of the canvas: Gen. Sandford oil on canvas 101.1 x 76.4 cm.; 39¾ x 30⅛ in. According to an old label affixed to the reverse, the sitter was godfather to Elizabeth, Lady Leitrim (d. 1817). He was promoted to the rank of major-general of the 52nd Regiment of Foot in 1761, was removed to the 10th Regiment in 1763, and was advanced to the rank of lieutenant-general in 1770.
