Description: Photographic portrait of landowner Issac Lankershim, California, [s.d.]. Issac Lankershim (1818–1882) is pictured here in bust, looking slightly to the right, ca.1870s. He wears a dark suit and ribbon-style tie, as well as a dark vest. His face is stout and a well-trimmed beard has gone white beneath his nose and on his chin. His hair is short-cropped and combed harshly back, but is otherwise full. His eyes seem gentle and earnest. Picture file card reads: "Born in Bavaria in 1820. Came to U.S. in 1837 and located in Missouri. He came to California about 1850 and was a rancher in Solano Co., sowing a large acreage to wheat and extending his operations to other districts, finally coming to L.A. County, where he purchased a large tract of land in the San Fernando Valley. In 1869 he became president of . In 1875, he and J.B. Lankershim loaded three ships with wheat for Liverpool from the San Fernando Ranch. Mr. Lankershim died in 1882, leaving two children--Mrs. L.N. Van Nuys and J.B. Lankershim." Photoprint reads: "Came down from San Francisco in 1869 and through the San Fernando Farm Homestead Association acquired title to the southernly half of the San Fernando Valley. He was later [...] by his friend Isaac Newton Van Nuys. Through their activities their land became one vast wheat ranch, with Liverpool, England, one of their markets."
