Description: Late 19th century photograph of the Roman bronze figure often referred to as the "Praying Germanic" found in the National Library in Paris, France. Originally published 1890; this image taken from a 1910 work entitled "The arts and crafts of our Teutonic forefathers" by G. B. Brown, where it is glossed as "Bronze figure of a German, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris". The statuette measure 12 cm in height. It is also known as the "Supplicating German" or "supplicating barbarian". "the existence of other bronze barbarians in similar attitudes of prayer and subjection suggests that the composition was a popular one" (Melissa Barden Dowling, Clemency and cruelty in the Roman world, 2006, p. 151)
