Description: Landmark of famous 1840 Indian raid, when Hamilton Ledbetter, builder of the first part of the house, fought Comanches, and his family escaped death by flight. Size and style of the house have been greatly enhanced by later owners: Judge A. H. Phillips (1844-71); Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice John Stayton (1871-88); lawyer Samuel B. Dabney (1888-91); Confederate Major Felix McReynolds (1891-93); attorney Fred Proctor (1893-1907). Owned since 1907 successively by Preston R. Austin, W.D. Welder, Patrick H. Welder - all kinsmen, heirs of noted pioneer.
